Booking:

Bookings are secured with a 10% deposit, or 25% for longer hires. The balance of your booking cost should be paid one week before your hire commencement.

A security deposit of £1000 (Insurance excess and interior damage deposit) needs to be paid by bank transfer or Credit card prior to departure. This will be refunded subject to the post hire inspection no later than 14 days after the safe return of the vehicle.

We operate a strict no smoking / vaping policy inside our vehicle....

We will provide insurance for one driver included in the hire cost. Additional drivers can be added and the charge will be determined by our insurers and the individual's driving history.

Drivers must be between 25 and 75 years of age and must have held a full UK or EU licence for at least 2 years with no more than 6 penalty points.

Each driver will need to produce:

Your original, full driving licence.

A DVLA code for us to check your details – we will advise you how to get this nearer the time of your hire.

If you are hiring from overseas we will need to see your driving licence and passport to confirm eligibility directly with our insurers prior to confirming your hire.

A copy will be taken of both documents. Please note that without these documents we cannot release the vehicle to you.

The hire rate is for travel within the UK on sealed roads (no off-roading) except where being driven within a registered camp-site.

Speed limits are to be observed at all times.

Parking fines, speeding charges (from cameras etc fixed or mobile) tolls and congestion charges will be deducted from the security deposit with an additional admin charge of £25 per event.

What? Why? When?

keyboard_arrow_down

Why are Kaikoura campers the perfect choice?

keyboard_arrow_down

Our campers are easier to navigate than big motor homes and a towing caravan. They fit into standard UK parking spaces and most multi storey car-parks 1.9 metres and above. They can be easily driven through country lanes and tracks, they are perfect for that impromptu lunch at the side of the road.

What comes in the van?

keyboard_arrow_down

Cutlery, bottle opener / cork screw, scissors, washing up liquid and sponge, cleaning spray, tin opener, a selection of glasses, cups, plates, bowls, small frying pan, small saucepan, kettle, chopping board, tea towel, electric hook up lead, dustpan & brush, levelling ramps, fold up table and chairs and a mallet.

Why hire from Kaikoura?

keyboard_arrow_down

The Kaikoura family love nothing more than the freedom and happiness of the open road. We have a passion for adventure and want you to experience the magic of VW Camping. Our campers have been handpicked and passed the ‘Kaikoura Adventurers’ test, all maintained professionally to a high standard and safety checked before each hire. All our campers are automatic and factory built - not conversions.

Can I come and see the campers before we decide?

keyboard_arrow_down

Yes, we want to make sure that our campers will suit your adventure, so feel free to give us a call and we’ll happily show you around. Or, you can have a look at our ‘How to…’ videos on our website from the comfort of your home.

So, how do I book?

keyboard_arrow_down

Have a browse through our website and check the availability dates for our campers. Complete the booking enquiry form online.

Booking page

What is the deposit and how much is it?

keyboard_arrow_down

Bookings are secured with a 10% deposit, or 25% for longer hires. The remaining balance - minus the deposit - is to be paid one week before the hire date.

This is to secure your booking, and can be paid securely on-line. Due to the popularity of the campers we are unable to transfer the deposit to different dates.

When does the remaining balance need to be paid?

keyboard_arrow_down

The remaining balance - minus the deposit is to be paid one week before the hire date. If the balance is not paid on time, the camper will be put back up for availability and you will lose your deposit - we’d hate to have to do this, so please contact us if you’re having any problems.

I usually drive a small car, will I be able to drive a camper?

keyboard_arrow_down

VW Californias are a pleasure to drive, whether you’re used to a mini or a HGV. They have power steering, automatic transmission and the seating position is quite high, so you are able to clearly see the road around you. Parking and manoeuvring in the campers is seamless thanks to the parking sensors on the front and back. Once you’re behind the wheel, you’ll soon become comfortable with the size. We’ll help you settle in before you go too.

Can I take your campervan to a festival, for example Glastonbury festival?

keyboard_arrow_down

We do allow our campers to music festivals providing you are a family or a couple, we do not allow single sex group bookings. Music festivals are charged at a higher rate & we also we require a double bond. Our standard returnable bond is £2500, some festivals are £3000. Please note, all our vehicles are fitted with live trackers, should you attend any festival without prior permission you will forfeit a minimum of £500 of your bond.

Is there a mileage limit?

keyboard_arrow_down

There is a mileage limit of 1000 miles per week or in equal daily parts thereof. Additional mileage is charged at 35p per mile.

If you require additional mileage please enquire at booking, we are always happy to help out where we can.

Can I leave my car at your premises?

keyboard_arrow_down

You are able to leave your car with us during your hire period free of charge, vehicles are left at the owner's risk.

I will get the train to collect the camper, can you pick me up?

keyboard_arrow_down

Of course. Hassocks station is on the mainline from Victoria and London Bridge to Brighton. We can happily collect you and drop you back free of charge.

What should I bring with me?

keyboard_arrow_down

You can bring your own bedding, or hire sleeping bags from us for £10 per bag per trip. If you are bringing your own, we recommend sleeping bags as they are small and easy to store in the camper. We will supply clean mattress protectors for your hire.

You will need to supply your own toiletries and towels - this is when those tester bottles come in handy! The campers have a built in fridge, so you can bring milk, butter etc.

We also have a welcome box for £25.00 that you can purchase when you pick up your camper - just a few essentials for your trip - tea, coffee, milk, sugar, biscuits etc.

Then the boring stuff… Photo driving license and two forms of ID for each driver to be included on the camper insurance - passport, utility bill (within 3 months and for the same address as the driving license etc). You may wish to purchase travel insurance for your trip as we are unable to cover your personal items as part of the camper insurance.

What about our furry friend?

keyboard_arrow_down

We know dogs love campers too, so we’re happy to welcome your furry friend onboard for an extra charge of £50 per hire - this is for deep cleaning of the van before the next hire, lets face it, a dirty dog is a happy dog, but not everyone likes wet dog! We do ask that you bring blankets for your pooches to sleep on.

Can I smoke in the camper?

keyboard_arrow_down

That’s a definite no, nadda, no thank you!

How many can you sleep in the camper?

keyboard_arrow_down

Our campers sleep four. Two in the pull out bed and two in the roof bed – a big favourite with our little campers!

Can I gift a hire?

keyboard_arrow_down

Yes, you can book an adventure for a loved one, just give us a call and we can set up a hand made gift voucher.

Do I need to take out my own holiday insurance?

keyboard_arrow_down

You may wish to arrange your own holiday insurance to cover any unlikely event that may cause cancellation of your booking - for example extreme weather conditions.

What time is collection and drop off?

keyboard_arrow_down

Pick up is from 14:00 and  drop off times are between 08:30am and 11:00am

We can arrange for the camper to be cleaned for a minimum £25 admin fee, fuel refill will be recharged at the local filling station rate plus £15 admin fee. Top 10 tips for first time hirers

keyboard_arrow_down
Camper van holidays are great fun and the chance to hire a camper for the first time is very exciting… However, to ensure you achieve the best experience, there’s a few pointers to make sure you choose the best hire vehicle, where to go, how long to go for and how to plan your journey. We’ve put together our top 10 tips to help you plan before you hire a camper for the first time.

1 Hiring a camper for the first time is an exhilerating experience, one of new adventures and maybe even challenges - exciting ones of course! With this in mind, we suggest that a four week tour of the Scottish Highlands may be a bit optimistic and not ideal for your maiden voyage! Plan a little more modestly. You will travel slower in the camper than in your regular car, so for your first trip you may find travelling 6 hours in one go is a bit optimistic - don’t worry, once you become a pro, four weeks in the Scottish Highlands will be a breeze! For your first trip, try a long weekend away, not too far from home. You only need to travel a 100 miles from home to find places of outstanding natural beauty, such as the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, Exmoor and Dartmoor in Devon, the Peak District in Derbyshire, The New Forest in Hampshire… the list goes on and we can even suggest some places and help plan your journey with you.

2 Driving the camper van isn’t like driving your day-to-day car. As explained in #Tip 1, bare in mind the camper is a van, not a car and will have a lot of kit on board, making it heavier. This will make the vehicle slower pulling away and stopping. So, don’t expect it to drive like a formula 1! It will however, be a very comfortable and enjoyable ride.  It’s also worth remembering the campers are longer and taller than your car, so beware of those low branches and parking - the campers all have front and back parking sensors making reversing and parking easier. They can also be parked in multi-storey car parks, just make sure you check the height restriction before you enter, any height over 1.98 metres will be ok.

3 Check what is supplied in the camper before you set off. There’s nothing worse than hiring a campervan for the first time, only to discover that it doesn’t come with the one creature comfort you can’t live without! With this in mind we provide you with a full inventory of everything you’ll find in the camper for you to use.

4 The idea of a camper is that they are compact, so don’t be fooled into thinking that if there are four of you, you’ll be sleeping in king size beds! This is an adventure and sleeping is for wimps! Saying that the beds are very comfy and far better than a camp bed, but if there are 4 of you, there wont be a lot of room for manouvre. The camper will come with an awning, but you may want to bring a tent to store your holiday gear, or get some peace!

5 Pack carefully. Very heavy items should be packed on the floor of the camper and nothing should be left out on the sides when on the move. The campers have countless cupboards to store things while on the move. If you need to brake suddenly, the last thing you want is a torch or tomorrows dinner hurtling through the camper towards you!

6 When you book a camping site check to see if you have a reserved pitch. If you don’t have a reserved pitch, you mayfind a great spot in which to settle only to find someone else has nabbed itlater in the day when you have gone out to explore in the camper.

7 We hire bike racks (for an additional fee) for you totake a couple of bikes on your trip. Cycling is a great way to explore the country and the coast and it will mean you won’t have to move the van when youhave secured that prime pitch in the camp-site.

8 Aim to arrive at your site in good daylight. If you hire a camper you probably won’t be too familiar with its features so it’s best to get to know them in daylight.  It will also help you find a good spot to pitch and put up a tent or gazeboo - if you decide to bring one. The last thing you want is to be sorting through tent poles and guy ropes in the dark when you are tired and hungry!

9 If you hire a camper for the first time you will have a whole new world of catering to consider. Campers have two gas rings, perfect for one pot meals  – with a little planning you can rustle up some wonderful meals - unless you’d rather a nice pub dinner! A good idea is to research one-pot meals that you can cook (that reduces your washing up too) and take key ingredients with you – you won’t want to waste time food shopping if you are only away for the weekend!  Don’t forget the campers have plug sockets for a kettle… or hairdryer! The plug socket only works when the van is hooked up to an electrical power source, ie at a campsite. You could also invest in a campervan cookbook before your trip.

10 Last, have a blast. There’s very little in this world that provides the sense of freedom that is offered by a campervan holiday. You can get up close and personal with the great outdoors, explore coast and country at close quarters and enjoy the fresh air. You will love it, the kids will love it and, oh yes, you can take the dog too!

● You will be liable for any costs associated with the incorrect use of fuel. All damage and accident repairs will be carried out by VW commercial vehicle approved agents using VW commercial vehicle parts. All repair costs must be authorised by Kaikoura Campers PRIOR to the work being undertaken.

32. Breakdown
If you have any difficulties report these immediately to us. In the event of breakdown, recovery or repair services will be provided via a breakdown service. We cannot accept liability for any costs arising from accident, breakdown or any other cause, e.g., replacement van costs, travel, accommodation, telephone calls, etc. Our liability extends to refunding your hire charge for any days you lose the total use of the Camper van. You will be responsible for returning to Kaikoura Campers, at your own cost, but preferably with the breakdown recovery service returning our camper van. If you have caused the breakdown through your own actions you will be liable for all costs incurred and we will not refund you any unused days of hire. If you have broken down you must remain at a safe distance from the camper van until the Breakdown Recovery Vehicle arrives. You may not abandon the camper van at the roadside. You must hand over the keys to the authorised Recovery Vehicle Driver. If you abandon the Campervan, we will deduct any transport and labour costs incurred in returning our camper van to Kaikoura Campers and any costs arising from loss or damage to the camper van whilst it is unattended from your Security Deposit.

33. Accidents, theft and vandalism
You must, where possible, report any traffic accident involving the camper van to the police (and us) as soon as practicable and report loss, damage or theft involving the camper van to the police (and us) immediately on discovery of the incident. Our insurance requires that you must not admit to any liability, release any party from liability, settle any claim or accept any disclaimer in the event of the accident, but should, if possible, take the names and addresses of everyone involved, including witnesses, car registration numbers, together with all the details of the accident, time, place, how it came about, damage to vehicles etc. If you have a camera, take photos of the scene. Please do not move the Camper vans before the police arrive, as long as keeping them in situ is a safe thing to do. An accident or theft report form must always be completed and submitted to us when you return the camper van or within 3 days of return of the Camper van, containing all the above information, plus diagrams if possible. In the event of theft, you must return the keys to us. You agree to co-operate with us and our insurers in any investigation or subsequent legal proceedings, providing evidence and attending court if necessary, arising out of any loss of or damage to the Camper van.
